FAQs

FAQs

There are two kinds of EV Charger. They are Alternative Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) Charger. The AC Charger feeds AC current from the grid to the car’s built-in “onboard charger” which then converts power from AC to DC current and feeds it into the car’s battery. On the other hand, DC charger has the converter built inside the charger, which can convert the AC current to DC from the grid at the charger side and then feeds DC current directly into the car’s battery.

There are different types of connector/socket for EV Chargers. For AC Charger, there will be Type 1 (SAE J1772) and Type 2 (IEC-62196-2). Type 1 is a single-phase plug which provide power output up to 7kW only, which is the plug type adopted in USA and some Asia countries (e.g. Japan). Type 2 is a three-phase plug which can commonly have power output between 7kW and 21kW, which is usually adopted in European countries. Both types of plug standard can be found in Hong Kong, however Type 2 is now more dominant in the market.

The answer will depends on two factors, which are 1) what power you are charging your EV, and 2) the total and remaining capacity of your EV’s battery. For example, you are using a AC Charger with power output of 7kW and the remaining capacity of your EV Battery is 50% (total capacity is 50kWh). Hence, you will need approximately 3 hours to charge up your EV (50kWh x 50% / 7kWh).

If you are living at house, it will be a simple task to do once we help to study the power availability of your house. However, if you are living at apartment/condos where the car park area is common area, which you will need to get permission from the building management / operator before you can install a private EV Charger at your parking space. No worry! We will guide you through the whole process and help you deal with different parties.

There are number of Public EV Charging Stations in Hong Kong which are operated by different operators.
